If you’re a little color-shy and want to expand your palette, build your color confidence by starting in a private space like a bedroom and begin with a neutral base. Use classic designs in timeless tones like cream, sand, putty and stone that can easily adapt to more vivid additions.

Monochrome bedroom palette

Set the stage for things to come with chic monochromes. Cream walls are the no-fail backdrop for a bed dressed with a mink velvet quilt and shams by Grandin Road. An oatmeal rug continues the color story underfoot.

Bed pillows and shams

Even in its neutral stage, the bed is a stunner thanks to varying textures and trims.

Textured throw

A smooth velvet quilt contrasts with a mixed fiber throw; tassels and pom-poms impart touchability.

Artwork above headboard

A series of small black-and-white pictures makes a statement when mounted in a similar way. Note, too, how the wood frames reflect the browns in the room.

Chair and pillow

Add extra élan by choosing items with a tone-on-tone or low contrast motif like the curtains and chair pillow.

Table and lamp

A simple midcentury-inspired side table serves as nightstand. The bisque gourd lamp with white lampshade is a classic piece that will stand the test of time. Solid neutrals and timeless shapes like these can be reused elsewhere in your home when you’re ready to jazz up your palette.
