Every designer knows that a good pair of drapery panels can add impact to a room by raising the apparent height of ceilings, visually widening windows, and affecting the play of light. But you don’t have to be a designer to hang curtains correctly. Get the basics with these easy steps.
First, determine the type of panel you want to hang and measure the space 4 to 8 inches above the window molding and three to 6 inches on either side.
This will give you the size of the panels and drapery rod you will need. Note the type of header your panel has, as this will effect how it hangs lengthwise.
You also need hanging hardware (usually comes with the rod), a level, drill/driver and bits, pencil, and measuring tape.
To create the illusion of higher ceilings, measure up to 8 inches above your window molding and mark the spot with a pencil.
Measure 3 to 6 inches beyond the window frame on either side and mark with a pencil. Extending the panels beyond the frame creates the illusion of a wider window.
Using the level horizonally, draw a straight line at the height mark on both sides of the window frame. Place the level vertically at the width mark on either side of the frame and mark the spots where the vertical and horizontal lines meet. This is where you will attach your hanging hardware.
Place the rod hanger at the marked intersection on each side and, using the pencil, make a mark on the wall for each screw hole in the hanger.
Using the drill/driver, drill pilot holes into the wall at the marks for the screw holes.
et voila!
Hard part done.
Next…
Attach the hanger to the wall with screws.
Slide drapery panels onto the rod if using rings, tab-top, rod-pocket panels or grommeted panels.
Attach the finials to the rod. Place the rod in the hanger and tighten the holding screws. If using tie-top curtains, place the rod first, then tie on the panels.
Take your curtains to new heights. An elegant pair of drapes can take a room from blah to beautiful. You’ve seen this lovely room before here.
Bring texture and warmth to windows with roman shades or matchstick blinds hung inside the window frame.
Take curtains right up to the ceiling molding to add grandeur to windows. An eye-catching pattern can be all the ornament your wall needs. Use a substantial drapery rod to balance visually.
Valences and cafe curtains bring a soft element to windows while allowing ample light to flow in.
One-of-a-kind window treatments can be a luxury both in terms of time and cost but don’t fret. More retailers are carrying stylish drapery options than ever before. Here are some favorites.
