At the end of summer and in early fall, a full-bodied sangria is a guaranteed palette-pleaser. Flavored with five luscious fruits, this recipe is like having a dessert in your glass. Serve it on cooler summer evenings and crisp fall afternoons.
Gather your ingredients:
- 1 750ml bottle red wine
- ½ cup brandy
- ½ cup triple sec
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 orange
- 1 lemon
- 1 lime
- 1 red apple
- 1 peach
- Club soda
Cut your fruit into wedges. Remove seeds from the oranges, lemons and limes.
Peel the skin from the peach, cut in half and remove the pit before slicing. Cut your apple into quarters then, slice the seeded core from each quarter before cutting into wedges.
You can use any red wine you wish, but a fruity wine such as Chianti works best. Pour the entire bottle into a lidded pitcher—something that holds half a gallon is best.
Pour ½ cup of brandy into the pitcher. You won’t be using the entire bottle so get something that’s nice to sip on by itself.
Follow with a half-cup of triple sec. You don’t have to use top shelf stuff here. That’s better reserved for by-the-glass cocktails.
Add the sugar and give it a good stir to dissolve the granules. If you prefer a sweeter wine, you can up the sugar content a bit.
Add the fruit wedges and push them down into the liquid until the pieces are covered. Cover with the lid and let the concoction soak overnight (or at least a couple of hours if you’re really thirsty!).
When you’re ready to imbibe, pour the liquid into an attractive serving pitcher. Add some of the fruit. Fill glasses with ice, pour sangria over ice, filling most of the glass and top with a splash of club soda—just enough to give it some fizz. Enjoy!
